When it comes to procreation, the offspring tend to embody the traits of their parents. When it comes to this custom Monome-Guitar, there’s certainly no exception to that rule. Thanks to Ben Brown for this beautiful marriage, and offspring of a guitar and monome. Great video as well.

In my formative high school years, my friends and I were discovering all sorts of amazing bands. My friend Stephen was hooked on The Ramones and tried to get me into them; quite unsuccessfully I might add. I just didn’t get it. There seemed to be nothing special at all about The Ramones but Stephen just couldn’t get enough. It all sounded the same to me. I told him, “Every song sounds the same to me” and he kind of paused for a bit. Then he got this look and said to me, “Yeah but it’s a great song.” Years later, after becoming a true Techno fan and DJ, I would remember Stephen’s words. Because they made total sense to me. Techno was my Ramones.

Speaking in Code is a documentary about the love of Techno, the people who produce it, and the people who are lost in it. The trailer is awesome and I’m really excited to see it because it seems so focused. Most documentaries on electronic music tend to focus on superstars and act as a starter kit for the uninitiated. Speaking in Code doesn’t really have that feel to me. From the press release:
“…an intimate account of people who are completely lost in music. A heartbreaking and lighthearted documentary, it’s a vérité glimpse into the world of techno.”
Features a stellar cast of producers (I’m really looking forward to the brothers Voigt footage): Modeselektor, Wighnomy Brothers, Monolake, Philip Sherburne, Ellen Allien, Tobias Thomas, Marc LeClair AKA Akufen, Wolfgang Voigt, Michael Mayer, Reinhard Voigt, Sascha Ring AKA Apparat, Sascha Funke, Mario Willms AKA Douglas Greed, Miss Kittin, Dan Paluska AKA Six Million Dollar Dan, and Mike Uzzi AKA Smartypants.
Right now director/producer Amy Grill is trying to get the film into several film festivals so if anyone has any connections in their town give her a tweet. Also check out the behind the scenes trailer via Facebook.

Comes in several flavas: Bad, badder, and baddest.
Found this strange little novelty item while drooling over the Optimus Maximus. Not quite sure if the DJ scratch pad would make it in the winner’s circle. I can imagine some dude pulling this card out of his wallet and whispering slyly to his date, “Hey… check this…” then start scratching like he’s Kid Koala. Deal-breaker? Probably. At least the video is hilarious.

Just found this informative video on how vinyl records are actually made, which is a crazy-complicated process. Despite the ups, downs, or chug-along of the music industry and the format wars, vinyl is still in popular demand (vinyl at Best Buy, anyone?), and I wouldn’t be surprised if it supersedes compact discs in the next couple years. We’ll have to see how vinyl dukes it out with USB albums, which is still the closest thing to a physical record that’s actually digital, for those who still care about the tactile experience. If you want to read up more on vinyl, check out wikipedia’s article on it.

I had recently discovered Alarm Will Sound, a 20-piece chamber orchestra, only last year. And when I had heard them perform Aphex Twin’s compositions from their album Acoustica, it got me even more hooked. Unfortunately, my experience with AWS has never reached further than my stereo or computer, but those of you in the New York area, particularly on July 22, 2009, have the chance to attend AWS’s 5-year anniversary concert at Le Poisson Rouge where they will be performing arrangements from the electronic composers Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Mochipet. Tickets are twenty-bucks and totally worth it. Now if I can just book that plane ticket to NY for July…

Came across this pretty helpful VJ site called VJ Kung Fu / http://vjkungfu.tv. From the looks of it, it’s more like a community site, where users upload videos that touch on DIY methods for VJs, and what helps to produce the best live shows. This particular episode touches on the structure of a VJ performance. Thought it was pretty helpful for any other VJs out there who’re either just getting their feet wet, or are looking to expand their live shows with something a little more dynamic…
Looks like the guy in the tutorial uses a monome 128 to split up the structure of his visuals. Kind of a dope way of “structuring” video, while still making it more of a hands on experience.

Found this video a while back and it’s still playing through the back of my eyes. Check out flight404’s website. Super tasty and visually most satisfying.
Shout out to Processing for making such amazing, creative and deliciously open-source application.

As some of you may know, a new release of mine has been in the works since the completion of my album, Axiom. Unfortunately, the transition from Axiom to my new release hasn't been a smooth one. I hit an unexpected snag...
